There's a gland in pretty much all mammals called the "Thyroid" gland and it produces an essential hormone called thyroxine. This hormone is a metabolic stimulant and provides the metabolic basis for other systems in the body like the immune system.
Sometimes the thyroid is UNDERactive for example in dogs, they'll become overweight and lethargic.
Sometimes, in cats, the thyroid is OVERactive and the cats will throw up a lot, become QUITE thin and their resting heart rate will be quite high. Sometimes over 180bpm. They may also develop a heart murmur.
To control the hyperthyroidism in cats, there used to be a surgery to remvoe the thyroid gland (and just hope to leave some parathyroid gland behind)
Nowadays they just give these cats a medicine that "kills" thyroid gland tissue. You simply give this medication every day and it annihilates the thyroid gland tissue until there's "pretty much none left" and that's how it's controled.
BUT THERE'S MORE
Somebody figured out they could put a radioactive molecule on an Iodine molecule and the thyroid gland would suck up that Iodine. And in so doing, the gland would be concentrating radioactive material WITH it and then the gland would (practically-speaking) "die" and that's all.
And it works. VERY well in 98+ percent of cases.
And, it's less than two thousand dollars.
Two of my customers have already used this service and are VERY pleased.
