HotSpots:

HOTSPOTS

A dog or cat can get an itchy place and scratch it "raw"
Some "juice" starts oozing through the damaged skin.
It (plasma) sticks all the hair together. And the dog has to lick it constantly to keep the smell from attracting predators.
These can get BIG in a very short period of time.
They can't heal while the dog is licking it. They just get worse.

#FITTING A CONE COLLAR (Illustrated)

Often, shaving away the hair makes sense so you can clean a hotspot, and so that hair doesn't stick in the crusted plasma.
Other times you can treat THROUGH the hair for small hot spots.

We also put these dogs on antibiotics. When they have BIG spots, or MANY spots it's recommended.
But antibiotics can create eventual drug-dependency by killing GOOD germs with the bad ones.
And they modify intestinal germs and those impacts can be profound.
So we TRY to treat without 'systemic' antibiotics.
Sometimes you 'get away with it'

The fastest and best treatment for a hotspot is a systemic steroid.
Lots of young vets won't use a steroid in a dog even if it means the pet will die. For example (real life) delayed-type hyper-sensitivty reactions misdiagnosed because they were two weeks after immunization and couldn't possibly be related to shots. (The dog died of eventual Auto Immune Meningitis as confirmed by autopsy)
(Delayed-type hypersensitivity reactions for example.)
I'll use a short acting steroid to get these dogs 'over the hump'.

Control of chewing and fleas is absolutely paramount.

BABYLTRL Dog Cone Collar for After Surgery, Soft Pet Recovery Collar for Dogs and Cats, Adjustable Cone Collar Protective Collar for Small Medium Large Dogs Wound Healing

Anymore these days companies are NOT making cones that are long enough to protect feet, OR stop head shaking. You really just need a cone. And this is the most important part - YOU HAVE TO BE ABLE TO FIX IT TO THE COLLAR because NO CONE is tight enough to resist a back foot pushing on it. And they'll do it! Spectracide 53960-1 FBA_53960-1 Triazicide Insect Killer for Lawns Granules 20 Pounds

I used this stuff and spread it with a grass-seed spreader. I was "pretty good" about pet areas and places they walked and went. I didn't get the corners of the yard very well - I mean, the fleas would have to cross a LOT of yard to get to my Ajax.

Yes this kills a lot of bugs but not many of the flying ones. It's a soil-level bug killer. I liked that.

What To Use In The Yard for Fleas

Have you seen these?

These can track your pet (or kid) in real time and unless they get the thing off their collar, you can find your pet. Highest rating on Amazon - reliable and again, unlimited range. (It uses the internet)

Put one on your pet soon, and cut your chances of losing your pet.

Long range, waterproof Pet Location GPS Tracker.

Something else I found for my dog "Ajax" that's cool:

Sporn Dog Halter STOPS "pulling and tugging" NOW. (Link)

This is what I use now, with my dog Ajax. I used to use the Gentle Leader, but I didn't like including his face in the thing. Now, this just goes around his chest and he DOES NOT PULL ANY MORE. It's great! Amazon.com has it.

You can buy a fat bundle of 'wet wipes' with Cetaphil and I'd recommend it. They're great for cleaning healing wounds, dirty ears, cleansing around some eyes, under-tails, surgery sites, sores.
