So yeah, I was approached by a family in mourning and they wanted me to put their mom's dog to sleep. It was a bounding, happy and healthy 3-4 year old dog. But during her final illness, the mom had considerable comfort knowing that when she passed, her beloved dog would join her at once in Heaven, and make the journey over the bridge with her. I "got it".
But I told them, VERY kindly; that I had made it a "thing" not to put down healthy dogs or cats. Not even strays at the pound. (And that cost me a lot of money but whatever.)
I said I understand this, and I mentioned that I honor their willingness and earnestness in following the instructions of the departed. "Don't Cross The Dead" is what I know.
I thought about it, and there was a Vet in Marietta who would do literally anything for revenue. He even DE-CLAWED a great big DOG so it wouldn't scratch the owner's hardwood floors. (MAYbe it would have turned out better if the dog was 4-5 days old if at all but the dog was like FOUR years old and the feet were FUBAR'd.)
And I knew that he would have zero-problem with their request, healthy or not, fair or not, just "give me the money and it's done".
And that's what happened.
Karma: And the Vet died in his early sixties about the age a normal person would go get their first draw on their retirement. A retirement account filled with decisions like the above.
