HGE or Hemorrhagic Gastro Enteritis: In really small dogs but especially YORKIES and Chihuahuas - they are very vulnerable to infections in the COLON and so you see 'diarrhea' first - and then sometimes it "goes bloody" and the colon starts peeling. This is called "Hemorrhagic GastroEnteritis" which is just blood from the colon. This can get serious and dehydration can simply kill 'em because the dogs "hardest hit" by this are under ten pounds and don't even hold much water. If you can get 'em to me before they are super dehydrated, and while they're moving around and active "like nothing's going on" - then they usually do great. If they're pooping chunks of red/purple slime and depressed, and dehydrated most of the time it's a good idea to put 'em in the hospital. For now, we can use a battery of medications and LEAVE THE BOWEL EMPTY for twelve to twenty four hours to heal - and maybe some fluids -> and USUALLY no hospitalization or emergency clinics and neuro exams are needed. Suspend food 12-24 hours Give medications per instructions Encourage drinking water or even Pedialyte/Gatorade. Report depression, blood chunks in poop, loss of skin-flexibility. Doc Johnson |
This is one of the foods I like the best for my own dog Ajax. It combines a good price, home-delivery, a healthy formulation with moderate taste and calories and delivers a good clean poop. Careful though: The bags look similar even though pellet size and age-to-feed differs. You could end up with a bag of large bites for your Yorkie. Chicken Soup for the Soul Turkey and Brown Rice. | | Loperamide can be used for diarrhea in dogs that are showing NO depression, dehydration, blood in the stool or vomiting. If any of the aforementioned occurs, you need to get your companion to the Vet at once. (Get Loperamide overnight)
Something else I found for my dog "Ajax" that's cool: |
Sporn Dog Halter STOPS "pulling and tugging" NOW. (Link) This is what I use now, with my dog Ajax. I used to use the Gentle Leader, but I didn't like including his face in the thing. Now, this just goes around his chest and he DOES NOT PULL ANY MORE. It's great! Amazon.com has it.
| You can buy a fat bundle of 'wet wipes' with Cetaphil and I'd recommend it. They're great for cleaning healing wounds, dirty ears, cleansing around some eyes, under-tails, surgery sites, sores. They are ALSO available right down the street at just about any store that sells makeup or cotton balls. So good. |
