Happy Pills? Sedatives: Are mostly for the dog. ANY really "git 'er' done" vet can see dogs like these without sedation, and they'll proudly tell you so: "Dr Johnson might need 'em sedated, by I can handle *ANY* dog straight up. Ain't no dog can't be held down by ME and my staff." But what they actually MEAN is a 'Rabies-pole-and-a-headlock' and that is traumatizing. And unnecessary because Vets have a "Vodka Tonic" in pill form. (Acepromazine, Trazadone (or both hahaha!)) So I'm saying: "I can't see this dog without sedation because I'm *NOT* gonna "Rabies pole and headlock" your dog." It'll take 2-3 hours for the pill to kick in fully. No point giving it and zipping over here 30 minutes to an hour later. ALTERNATE SUGGESTION: Your dog would love a Trazadone or Valium before coming in. I see such sweet hearts, some will pull on their lead to see us. THEN - when some get on the table and a needle comes out, they panic. That's not very rare. People do that. If you wanna get a Trazadone or Valium or something for 'em before next visit just let me know and I'll drop one in a bottle or send it. They can 'drift' through their appointment with an amused smile on their face. Doc PS: My dog Ajax has anxieties and if I wasn't his Vet I'd give him a happy pill no matter what was going on when he went to the Vet. Why should he experience every single thing with full-on-acuity? Nah I take pills to fly, he can have a pill to get a needle. |
Keep Calm Stress Support In canines, the three best "happy" compounds you can get over the counter do NOT include CBD, how about that!? Valerian Root, Bacopa and St. John's Wort when found together are DYNAMITE and even help with epilepsy. This is the closest thing I've found and I sometimes have owners give this to anxious pets.
Something else I found for my dog "Ajax" that's cool: |
Sporn Dog Halter STOPS "pulling and tugging" NOW. (Link) This is what I use now, with my dog Ajax. I used to use the Gentle Leader, but I didn't like including his face in the thing. Now, this just goes around his chest and he DOES NOT PULL ANY MORE. It's great! Amazon.com has it.
| You can buy a fat bundle of 'wet wipes' with Cetaphil and I'd recommend it. They're great for cleaning healing wounds, dirty ears, cleansing around some eyes, under-tails, surgery sites, sores. | |
