Colitis:
There are a dozen reasons for a dog to have COLITIS or inflammation / bleeding of the colon.
But the treatment is pretty consistent. The 'tide' needs to go out on the gut-contents and let the medicine do it's 'thing' so we suspend feeding for 18-24 hours.
And then we use medications that slow gut motion, patch bloody spots on the colon wall, dry up excess water and kill the germs MOST OFTEN associated with colon infections.
Good idea to check for worms but more importantly, GIARDIA. Cause that can spread to people.
Whipworms are common in dogs. Especially dogs not-on heartworm prevention, or dogs that are much older - or much younger when their vulnerability increases exponentially.
So there's a small diagnostic aspect to cases like these and then treatment which can home-in on a diagnosis.
Sometimes a dog doesn't resolve fast - they're worth a deeper look. Bloodwork always 'leads' diagnostically on these.
Dehydration or frank blood loss moves to the forefront of concerns.
Inadequately immunized pets are often suffering Parvo or Corona virus which may not be fatal in the semi-vaccinate or older dog - but can go through a LOT of paper towels hahaha.
We'll see.

Questions: How long does colitis usually last and can it become 'chronic'?
Answer: With treatment colitis usually comes under control in a day or two. If colitis lasts longer than that WITH TREATMENT, more diagnostics are needed. colitis can BE chronic but having colitis ONCE isn't a 'sentence' to a life of it. The most common cause of colitis is eating something dead they found in the yard. the second most common is some heap of tablescraps or some dumpster diving in the house.
Some grocery store foods are better than others.
