Cats that are "blocked" can't get urine out of their bladders due to swelling in the urethra plus or minus crystals, and other sediment, even 'stones' made of crystals.
It's a life threatening condition because the Kidneys can't work while the bladder is blocked. So kidney failure is working in the background.
What HAS to happen is the bladder needs to be unobstructed.
Sometimes Vets will attempt to put a needle into the bladder but there is a HIGH risk that the bladder will POP instead of drain. *ALWAYS* it's better to anesthetize the cat and install a drain through the urethra. This is easily accomplished (straighten the urethra to pass the catheter) under anesthesia but as such, is an "in-patient" (hospital-stay) process. They may even be left with catheter IN and anti-inflammatories on board to allow cats to un-swell, and pass their urinary calculi.
Urinary tract infection, and nutrition (high ash diets) are usually the underlying cause.
If the bladder RE-obstructs after the removal of the catheter, a surgery is available to open the urethra and KEEP it "big enough".
This is an emergency situation until it's unblocked. If undetected or un-obstructed, cats will die.
