Viral Diseases in Koi & Pond Fish

Most people think viruses would kill a mess of fish, or, on the other end of the spectrum, that viruses do not matter in Koi Health.

Both would be wrong. Carp Pox, for example, pictured at left, won't kill a fish unless it prevents them from eating (literally proliferates to wreck their mouths) and Koi Herpes Virus, on the other hand will kill 95% of exposed Koi.

So, understanding viruses could have some utility.

Stop The Losses From KHV
Control (if not cure) of Koi Herpes Virus. What's so hard to understand? In Israel, to create super-immune fish they required the fish to survive about 21-30 days [with the virus] to create a good immune response. But Koi don't LIVE that long with KHV. So they infected them, and before they'd die, they' heated them to stop the disease. They had to do that three times. First, heat stopped the infection. But that does not prove that the virus died. The FACT that they had to RE-INFECT THEM (instead of letting the virus 'reactivate') suggests BOTH: That the virus DID die or the fish would not need reinfection, and that it was NOT an immune response. (If it was an immune response, they could not be reinfected.)
The pundits have never "gotten" these concepts and hate this article more than anything. They believe that a Herpes virus is required to behave in cold blooded animals the same way it behaves in WARM blooded animals.
