Koi and Fish Pond Treatments

This page will be the gateway to articles that best fit the concepts of treatments for Koi, or their environment. Discussions about HOW TO USE medicines, and perform various treatments. And some of the treatments themselves.

Using Salt Against Ciliates
Ciliated protozoans like Ich, Chilodonella, Costia, Trichodina and the like, is usually very effective. Ich takes longer to clear. Chilodonella has shown no resistance, so it's different for each parasite, but how do you actually USE Salt?

Chlorine, Chloramine, and Dechlorinator
You should ALWAYS use dechlorinator if you are still using the purge and refill water change system. Those who have embraced the current constant replacement 'drip irrigation' method will not need to use dechlorinator because even at 10% per week, only 1% of their water will ever have a trace of Chlorine.

Flipover Disease & Surgery For It
Goldfish of the deeper bodied varieties like Ryukins and such may flip over and quite often it's permanent. There's a way to "weight" them into an upright position.

Acriflavine
A basic discussion of Acriflavine, also see the article on controlling Lymphocystis with Acriflavine. And never forget Acriflavine can harm plants but might be effective on Costia.

Bioseeding
How to BioSeed a pond or tank, what it is, how it's done and some of the followup you will need to do. Yes, basically, it IS possible to have an "instant cycle" with full de-nitrification in place but be careful...

Chloramine T
Using Chloramine T for flukes and bacterial infections.

Formalin in Tanks or Aquaria
Using formalin in tanks is a little different that using it in ponds. Here's an article discussing Formalin in tanks.

Formalin in Ponds Against Ciliates
Formalin for parasites in general with an emphasis on using Formalin against ciliates like Costia which is Formalin's strong-suit.

Hydrogen Peroxide for Oxygenation
Hydrogen Peroxide for aeration of ponds if the blowers or filter go out. Instant oxygen in a little bottle. But be careful.

Levamisol / Tramisol
Using Levamisole as a dewormer in Koi

Malathion (Ughhh)
Using Malathion against Flukes and crustacean parasites in BIG ponds and SMALL lakes.

Peroxide for Deactivation of KMnO4
Using Hydrogen Peroxide for deactivation and declorizing Potassium permanganate treatments.

Potassium Permanganate Against Ciliates
Using potassium permanganate against ciliates. It's an every day thing....Literally.

Using Prazi for Flukes
Using Praziquantel against Flukes. This safe and now-affordable medicine has completely changed the outcome of Fluke treatments. No filter effects, no fish effect, no plant effects. Way Cool.

Program for Anchor Worm
Using Program / Lufenuron against crustaceaon parasites. Yep, one big White 490mg tablet per one thousand gallons knocks out Anchor Worm and Fish Lice

Rotenone for Pond Depopulation
Using Rotenone to depopulate a pond before stocking. So, sure you might have a big ol' mud pond to use for Koi but there might be a mess of catfish in there to mess with them....And surely no breeding is gonna happen. Wipe out the native fish using Rotenone.

Supaverm for Flukes
Using Supaverm for Flukes. This imported sheep dewormer needs to be shaken before use and not delivered in hot spots. Be careful and you will have excellent results eliminating Flukes.

Using Tricide Neo for Ulcers in Pond Fish
Using Tricide Neo for Koi and pond fish ulcers. Bath? Spray? Dip? Which is best for you? Be careful
