"When To Spay My Dog":

The top three Veterinarian Consultants in the country ARE NOT veterinarians, this is what it's come to in the dog food industry*.

If you're planning to spay, it's an easy decision.
At 7 months (right after first heat whether you notice it or not)
-or-
Before 2 years (protect from cancer)
-or-
Before 49 pounds (least complicated surgery)

....whichever comes first. :u)

This would be me: 7 months old; look at the vulva and make sure it's not 'infantile' or 'recessed' and if NOT - spay then. If it *IS* infantile (rare after first heat) and that's NOT caused by emerging obesity (common) then I'd wait til after the SECOND heat at 12 months and spay.
I'd never own a dog with a higher-than-70-pound mature body weight. So the complications associated with spay in heavier dogs is obviated.

There are ten MAJOR conflicting articles on this issue. Each one, with an entire college, or a professor, even retired human doctors speaking on behalf of the Vet College - going to the mat for their position and calling everyone else 'wrong' - (the retired HUMAN doctor at UCDavis is also selling dogfood with Karen Becker I don't trust her one whit.)

There's a whole writeup on my drjohnson.com website about these statistics.

*The top three advisers on Canine and Feline Health are

Human Cardiologist - Dr. Mercola

Human Retired Dentist - Retired Human Pharmacist.

And "Dr." Marty - who sells dog food and may actually be a vet in real life. I can't tell since he seems to only write advertisements.

Have you seen these?

These can track your pet (or kid) in real time and unless they get the thing off their collar, you can find your pet. Highest rating on Amazon - reliable and again, unlimited range. (It uses the internet)

Put one on your pet soon, and cut your chances of losing your pet.

Long range, waterproof Pet Location GPS Tracker.

Something else I found for my dog "Ajax" that's cool:

Sporn Dog Halter STOPS "pulling and tugging" NOW. (Link)

This is what I use now, with my dog Ajax. I used to use the Gentle Leader, but I didn't like including his face in the thing. Now, this just goes around his chest and he DOES NOT PULL ANY MORE. It's great! Amazon.com has it.

You can buy a fat bundle of 'wet wipes' with Cetaphil and I'd recommend it. They're great for cleaning healing wounds, dirty ears, cleansing around some eyes, under-tails, surgery sites, sores.
