Clinician's Notes On Parvo Management
Puppy Is Laid out with a bad diarrhea - smell iron.
PARVO TEST HOT POSITIVE
Symptoms are sudden onset 5 to 8 days post-exposure.
PLAN
Sucralfate (Coats guts and limits bleeding)
Loperamide (Stops diarrhea pretty well)
May need metoclopramide (stops vomiting.)
Watery poop: Phenobarbital chips (Stops diarrhea VERY well)
3cc red can coke whenever he seems really, really flat. Or every EIGHT hours.
SQ fluids 60-100cc twice a day.
Albon 1x daily (Kills germs)
A/D diet is a pasty food in a can. See what you can get the puppy to take.
It sometimes happens that anemia can be fatal and sometimes drawn out after 'clinical' recovery. It sometimes happens that secondary bacterial infections set up in the liver or other organs while the puppy is so weak so on occasion I might use some Clavamox or Simplicef alongside metronidazole or similar. And it's even possible for the bowel to get deeply inflamed after so much immune-fighting and may need management for temporary or permanent Inflammatory Bowel Disease.
