Brenda

Brenda at Grooming Galley on Roswell Rd towards the Big Chicken is a good groomer been around a LONG time with lots of experience and a good reputation which is priceless in a franchised world. #groominggallery #brenda

Susan Conner

Susan Connor - Susan is a groomer in East Cobb GA who is really good, experienced and has a way with dogs of all temperaments. May or may not sometimes be taking new customers, very popular. #susan #susansgrooming #groomer

Glucose

Blood Glucose - A rapid test of blood sugar (glucose) levels to screen for diabetes #glucosescreening #checkingaglucose

Checking Hydration

An at-home assessment of hydration is important when calling to report diarrhea or "drinking a lot of water" and of course you don't "need" to do this. It's really the Vet's job. But you can. #assessingdehydration #checkinghydration

Entederm

Is a particular medication for ears (and some topical / skin issues) that is oily, water occlusive and "stays in" a long time. I like it used twice a day for a while, once a day for a while and then every other day for a week or two in order to "really fix" an ear. #entederm #using entederm (Using Entederm)

"Brushed Out"

Means that you or a groomer should brush the pet out, remove as MUCH stray loose hair, dander and scale from the coat as possible using a slicker brush from Amazon.com. See below.

Best. Brush. Ever.
I use this brush on Ajax because it picks up great, and it unloads the hair with the push of a button. Cheap, too.

"Old Dog Kidney Thirst"

"If I drink enough, my kidneys won't make me feel crummy."
Applies to cats too, and represents the bodies' attempt to diurese (dilute and rinse-away) toxins in the blood stream that are NORMALLY expelled by the kidneys but as the kidneys 'age' they function less-and-less fabulously. So the pet will drink a slowly-increasing amount of weight to diurese themselves until ONE day they cannot drink enough to keep themselves "okay" kidney-wise and I look at them. They're a little dehydrated and then we manage kidney issues.

"Nothing Growing in There"

Refers to the abdominal exam wherein I try to feel anything developing in the abdomen like an enlarged kidney, enlarged or abnormal spleen, or a tumor of any kind associated with the liver, intestines or bladder. If I don't feel anything weird on the abdominal palpation and I don't feel any 'masses' or enlarged organs I'll write "Nothing Growing in There."

EasOtic

...is an ear medication that you put in affected ear ONCE a day. It dries into the ear and works for days after you're done with the medicine. Additionally it's easy to dose because "one pump" on the bottle is a ''day's dosing' and you don't have to "be careful not to use too much or too little", and it has a very broad spectrum.

"No Rubbing"

...is one of the most important things I'll tell you because if a dog can rub an infected or damaged eye, it will do MORE damage than the original lesion. ESPECIALLY if the pet can rub the eye on shag carpet. So, a cone collar is a good way to protect the eye IF the cone collar extends PAST the nose.

Eye Wipe Finger Dab

...is just "How to Apply Eye Ointments" meaning, putting a little rice-sized glob of ointment on your finger tip, and then wiping it off on the eyelid (INTO the eye) of the affected/infected eye. If you try to put eye ointment into the eye with the tube itself, you might go crazy trying. It's harder to do that.

Lipoma

...just refers to a blob mass) made of fat under the skin. They are USUALLY "no big deal" but I can tell you for sure. We had one that was growing INWARD into the chest. So sometimes they matter. (Lipomas Illustrated)

Scrapey

...just refers to the act of scraping the teeth, by way of dental exercise with something that is ALMOST as hard as a tooth and all we have are bones, like BEEF bones, and "Himalayan / Yak's Milk" Bones which are just "bones" made of milk that's been boiled down to a concretion that's hard as a rock. Amazon.com is a good resource there.

Hot Wet Cotton Ball

...just means a cotton ball that's been dipped in 'quite warm' water and used to clean around the eye. It softens the green goo in the fur around the eye without cleansers or detergents (soaps) that would cause irritation. It's nothing special.

Veggies Low Carb

...refers to vegetables that are suitable to give a dog or cat but that have LOW starch or carbohydrate content. My favorites are green beans, brocolli, carrots, squash, zucchini. My least favorite are peas, potatoes and lima beans. Too carby.

HW Tested

...refers to "HeartWorm Tested" which means we ran a heartworm test on the pet.

"Residential Body Weight"

...Is a term usually applied to cats who sleep and eat too much and develop a 'couch potato' waistline and bascially become 'residentially obese' instead of triathlete lean. "Residentially abundant" animals are not "fat" per se but they are far from "lean."

BCS

...is Body Condition Score. More about that here.

NBD

...means "No Big Deal" but normally I write that out in the notes somewhere. But that's the shorthand there.

Flea Saliva Lasts 7 Days:

Yes that's true. And flea saliva causes itching unless it's reeled in. So, even if you kill ALL the fleas - the cat or dog will probably be itching from them up to a week later. It doesn't mean that flea-control didn't work.

Sebaceous Wart:

...#sebwart...Is just an oil gland that has decided to go "neoplastic" (hardly cancer) but grow OUTward onto the skin and not stay tucked neatly under the skin in a follicle. They look like a brain, specifically, Mojo-Jojo's brain from Power Puff Girls. They're harmless but they are also oily, get hit by the groomers and bleed sometimes, and gross people out when they find them while patting a dog or cat.

TLDR

...sort of means "Too Long Didn't Read" and it's an anacronym I use when I text people LOTS of links and information. Sometimes a phone-screen is too small for all those text-shenanigans. So I also send a lot of the same information in writing or direct people here to bone-up on "what's wrong with my pet?"

Inulin Soluble Fiber Chicory Root

...is a summary of "how to get the proper fiber into the dog's diet." And that is: There are two kinds of fiber, soluble and insoluble fiber (aka roughage) and dogs benefit from soluble fiber. You can get PURE soluble fiber from some plants and it's called "inulin" and the most of it comes from Jerusalem Artichoke or Chicory Root. I like the chicory root sourced. And you put a tsp in your coffee, or in your dog's food, and it's like eating six beets, 2 carrots, a head of romaine and 12 string beans as far as beneficial soluble fiber.

Subpar Spit Production:

...There's a syndrome in dogs (and cats to an extent) where they produce "less-and-less" spit over the years. Eventually a dog just doesn't make enough spit to keep their teeth 'bathed' and their gums soothed and we see teeth with a pasty slime and inflamed gums. Where's the spit? Aggressive dental exercise MAY increase spit production. Worth a try.

PND

...stands for Post Nasal Drip which occurs when a dog or cat has an inflamed sinus / nasal passage from allergy or highway soot in the environment (ground-level micropollution) and then 'fluid'' traces the back of their throat and into the stomach creating nausea, and hacking/wretching and reverse sneezes.

"Prolly"

...just means "Probably" when you're hip and cool.

CRT

...is just the "capillary refill time" when you press on the gums, or the ear flap there's a light-colored dot where the blood has been pushed out, and that should refill in under 2 seconds and if the CRT is "slow" or "long" there may be something wrong with hydration, cardiac output or blood pressure.

Tresaderm

...is a refrigerated ear medicine that's great for Ear Mites, Yeast infections, and inflammation in the ear because it treats ALL of those things.

Compensated Cardiac condition

...just means that the heart is doing 'pretty well' because of medications which have compensated it's defects in function. The heart may be keeping up with fluid accumulation in the lungs because it's performance is compensated by furosemide.

"Girl Parts"

...refers to the vulva and the crease through that, and around that.

"Depo Shot"

...refers to an injection of methyl prednisolone acetate which is a power corticosteroid with positive impact on itching, allergy, autoimmune conditions, inflammation from arthritis, licking, excema.

"Boy Parts"

...That's pretty much the balls (testicles) sack (scrotum) and weiner (penis) because we haz science-terms at JVS.

Oxyfresh has been around a VERY long time and still hasn't been surpassed. I love the water additive. I recommend it's made fresh daily with distilled water, and for bad mouths - double strength. Always safe. this will NOT dissolve tartar but it will kill germs, reduce pus and infection and keep teeth from getting "bad" if they're not already. Kit includes gel and brushes.

Oxyfresh complete dental kit.

BABYLTRL Dog Cone Collar for After Surgery, Soft Pet Recovery Collar for Dogs and Cats, Adjustable Cone Collar Protective Collar for Small Medium Large Dogs Wound Healing

Anymore these days companies are NOT making cones that are long enough to protect feet, OR stop head shaking. You really just need a cone. And this is the most important part - YOU HAVE TO BE ABLE TO FIX IT TO THE COLLAR because NO CONE is tight enough to resist a back foot pushing on it. And they'll do it! (Buy The Right One on Amazon)

Something else I found for my dog "Ajax" that's cool:

Sporn Dog Halter STOPS "pulling and tugging" NOW. (Link)

This is what I use now, with my dog Ajax. I used to use the Gentle Leader, but I didn't like including his face in the thing. Now, this just goes around his chest and he DOES NOT PULL ANY MORE. It's great! Amazon.com has it.

Dog Canine K9 Knee Stifle Brace Wrap

Labra Dog Canine K9 Knee Stifle Brace Wrap Metal Hinged Flexible Support Treat ACL CCL Luxating Patella Cruciate Ligament Sprain Strain Tear Injuries

I couldn't get behind these until this one came out. It has a strap that keeps the thing from sliding down. THAT strap has a strap that keeps the thing from rolling down off the dog's rump. And the whole thing does NOT wrap around his weiner area (which would have been fine for a female dog of course) so this one has THREE key engineering points.

Buy the proper knee brace and put it on tight!
