Carsickness:
Carsickness
"I just can't ever get used to the car."
Said no dog, EVER.
They can get used to the car, in time!
Four things.
1) Meclizine (over the counter ask the pharmacy tech) 25mg ONCE in the morning of travel.
2) Light feeding, maybe a piece of bread. No "MEAL" on the tummy for any 'decent' ride.
3) Start with 2-3 minute "spins" around the block and let 'em out before they vomit.
4) "Practice Makes Perfect" and work up to 'trips'.
5) SOMETIMES a little Acepromazine (From my office) can reduce the anxiety of a car ride, AND it's anti- nausea.
Short rides graduating up to longer rides.
I also wrote this next passage about it:
Dogs get carsick.
Practice, and medications can help.
Very few dogs remain carsick forever.
Start with very short rides like 'around the block'.
Longer and longer rides on an empty stomach.
Meclizine is also good.
A small dog gets 1/4 to 1/2 tablet ONCE on the day of travel.
Any dog over 30 pounds gets 1 whole tablet - ONCE on the day of travel.
You can get Meclizine in medications like:
Dramamine
Bonine
and we have it here at the clinic.
25mg...meclizine... is what should be on the 'ingredients' list.
NOT diphenhydramine.
