Body Condition Score Four-Plus

To be honest, this is the most common "weight" comment I make in East Cobb. BCS4+ is "almost fat" and should be given relief.

BCS4 is a natural ideal. It's the weight a dog would eat its way up to, in nature if it had unlimited chipmunks to eat - and at BCS4 the appetite would fall away because of Leptin. A hormone.

Leptin was the way Caveman Dogs didn't get too fat to outrun a T-Rex.

When we give modern, "Your dog-will-love it" foods, Leptin no longer holds-sway and the dogs will EAT such delicacies and get fat, ignoring their Leptin levels.

So then the dogs go PAST BCS4 - healthy lean, and move into obesity - like, BCS4

The main difference between BCS4 and BCS4+ is that a BCS4+ looks just like the BCS4 from the side, BUT IT LOOKS LIKE A BCS5 from the top view.

In other words their abdomen is tubular - it's as deep as it is wide. That's DIFFERENT than the BCS4 which is narrow from the top.

Weight loss is indicated in a BCS4+ but no where near as urgently as a BCS5.

Anymore these days companies are NOT making cones that are long enough to protect feet, OR stop head shaking. You really just need a cone. And this is the most important part - YOU HAVE TO BE ABLE TO FIX IT TO THE COLLAR because NO CONE is tight enough to resist a back foot pushing on it. And they'll do it! This is what I use now, with my dog Ajax. I used to use the Gentle Leader, but I didn't like including his face in the thing. Now, this just goes around his chest and he DOES NOT PULL ANY MORE. It's great! Amazon.com has it.

I couldn't get behind these until this one came out. It has a strap that keeps the thing from sliding down. THAT strap has a strap that keeps the thing from rolling down off the dog's rump. And the whole thing does NOT wrap around his weiner area (which would have been fine for a female dog of course) so this one has THREE key engineering points.

Buy the proper knee brace and put it on tight!
