What if there was a "kind of expensive" pill you could give a dog with a CHRONICALLY infected and itchy skin - that would SHUT DOWN the itching and redness and all that?
That's Apoquel. From Zoetis.
The problem is that it also shuts down the WHOLE immune system besides what a dog needs to fight germs from the intestine and in the muscle.
In other words, the dog doesn't just start rotting. But it does get more prone to infections in the skin. And it has a 12 percent (twelve percent) chance of cancer - specifically "cutaneous T-cell lymphoma"
But the company is hilarious - they maintain that all those cancer dogs had the cancer BEFORE they started Apoquel. "Apoquel may bring pre-existing cancer to the surface."
They also hold that twelve percent of a specific group of dogs get that cancer per year anyway.
It doesn't matter. Some dogs are in pitiful shape with their skins, and frankly, the owners are OKAY with the dog having an 88% chance of doing GREAT.
It's not for the dog that's a little itchy a couple times a year.
I'll send Apoquel if we get backed into it. But I wanted you to know EVERYTHING about that if we have to.
Doc Johnson

![]() | Labra Dog Canine K9 Knee Stifle Brace Wrap Metal Hinged Flexible Support Treat ACL CCL Luxating Patella Cruciate Ligament Sprain Strain Tear Injuries I couldn't get behind these until this one came out. It has a strap that keeps the thing from sliding down. THAT strap has a strap that keeps the thing from rolling down off the dog's rump. And the whole thing does NOT wrap around his weiner area (which would have been fine for a female dog of course) so this one has THREE key engineering points. Buy the proper knee brace and put it on tight! |
